The Clubhouse Model: Fellowship and Purpose

What is a Clubhouse?

Venture House uses a unique approach to mental health, known as the Clubhouse Model, which is rooted in the concept that working is restorative and that lasting social connection promotes health and wellness.

In 2014, the Clubhouse Model was awarded the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize for extraordinary contribution toward alleviating human suffering.

Clubhouse Provides Purpose

The daily activities at Venture House center around the work-ordered day, which utilizes the skills of all Clubhouse members. Our members work, on a voluntary basis, side by side with staff in running daily operations, including intake and admissions, meal preparation, facility maintenance, program development and implementation, tutoring, as well as social and recreational activities.

Members are involved in decision-making at every level of the organization, including potential service on the Board of Directors. Our members are “needed, wanted, and expected.” That experience of being valued and valuable drives self-esteem and builds the confidence required to have agency and self-determination in life.

Membership That Matters

We welcome members who are New York City residents (age 18 and older) with a mental health diagnosis (Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, PTSD, and others). There is no out-of-pocket cost to our members. Our positive, inclusive Clubhouse Model has been life-changing for so many people.
